Émile Zola (1840-1902): Natüralizm akımının en önemli temsilcilerinden biri olan Zola, romancının olayları bir izleyici gibi kaydetmekle yetinmemesi, kişileri ve tutkularını bir dizi deneye tabi tutarken, duygusal ve toplumsal olayları da bir kimyacı gibi ele alması gerektiğini savundu. Zola içinde yaşadığı eski dünyanın yıkıntılarını inceledi, gelecekteki bir dünyanın olgularını saptamaya çalıştı. Bu niyetle yirmi iki yılda yazdığı yirmi romandan oluşan Rougon-Macquartlar dizisi başta olmak üzere çok sayıda büyük eser verdi. İkinci İmparatorluk Dönemini anlatan bu dizinin dokuzuncu kitabı Nana (Paris Yaşamı) kitap olarak ilk kez 1880 yılında yayımlandı.
