Oxford Bookworms Library: Stage 4: We Didnt Mean to Go to Sea

Arthur Ransome

The four Walker children never meant to go to sea. They had promised their mother to stay safely in the harbour, and to be home on Friday in time for tea. But there they are in someone elses boat, drifting out to sea in a thick fog. When the fog lifts, they can turn round and sail back to the harbour. But then comes the wind and the storm, driving them out even further across the cold North Sea ...

She didn’t believe he was a killer. 2 Carmen had shot him down by the old oil wells, and his body was in the sump. 3 She was sick, both in mind and in body. 4 Eddie knew that Carmen had killed Regan. After the murder, Vivian went to Eddie for help because she didn’t want her father or the police to know about it.

This record is for extracts from We didn't mean to go to sea, including the Oxford Bookworms graded reader, which contains six chapters, a glossary, and before and after reading activities. Please do not combine with the record for the whole work. "We didn't mean to go to sea" is, in my opinion, the best of the Arthur Ransome books. If you have read the complete set of his books (12 in all) you will know that the Walker children are extremely level headed and resourceful but the terrifying experience they went through in this book would be enough to panic the most confident of us.
